RADAR/Situation & Environment Analysis

INTRODUCTION
If you have read our introduction and explanation of the practical implementation and have dealt with the Enterneering® approach, then you should have a clear understanding of what you want to use this tool for and why.
You can download it [see the download area at the end of this text] as a training guide or suggestion for the creation of an individual tool in pdf format with the descriptions of all individual steps or you can download our Excel source file directly and use the accompanying explanations for your personalised training.
Please always keep in mind that when we created our tools, we had to commit to a specific path and content. This may be different in your specific case. In our tools, the fields requiring values or texts are coloured in BEIGE or ROSE. All fields with calculation formulas or automated content are either not coloured or greyed out. These fields are also protected from changes without admin rights.
In our tool 'Situation & Environment Analysis', follow the steps shown on the left-hand side of the screen from top to bottom. Note that you limit your input - it is about the most essential issues that are of utmost importance for the company and its future.
Section 1 (Step A):
| ➟ | We have limited the entries in our tool to a maximum of 10. |
| ➟ | The order in which the TOP challenges are entered is not important at this point, as they will be weighted and sorted later. |
| ➟ | To define the importance of the topics as objectively as possible and based on key figures, we have defined three evaluation criteria for the coming years as a benchmark. 1) Impact of the topic on the company's competitive/market position, 2) Impact on the company's growth, and 3) Impact on the P&L. These three criteria are each weighted as a percentage of their importance for the company as a whole. These weights should be assigned once for all topics below. With such weightings, always make sure that the total is 100%. We ensure this in our tools through simple formulas for plausibility checks. |
| ➟ | For each topic or challenge, evaluation points from 1 to 5 (high) are to be entered for each criterion. In other words, how high is the impact of the topic or challenge on the development of the respective evaluation criterion (position, growth, P&L). Entries in the decimal range are allowed in our tool. |
| ➟ | Subsequently, we have integrated a column with an effort-related value into our tool. Here you can enter how large the gap is until the challenge is successfully addressed or how far the company is from achieving it. We have chosen to enter this as a % of 100. This is a very rough estimate, but it helps to identify low-hanging fruit or to clarify the existing pressure to act. |
Section 2 (Step B):
We have added a column for categories in this section before the actual topics. This column serves as a memory aid, stimulates thinking, and facilitates future grouping. As in Section 1, we have limited the number of possible entries to a maximum of 10 rows - we want to keep reminding ourselves to focus.
Unlike in Section 1, we have opted for a satisfaction scale of 1 to 10 (high) in our model for assessing current mood, to allow for a slightly finer grading. These satisfaction scores are automatically converted back into the typically used 1-5 scale in our tool, making them assessable and calculable.
When working on this section, keep in mind that the assessments here should ideally not be done by a single person or in isolation. You can read more about this in our implementation notes.
Section 3 (Step C):
As described in the implementation section of Elements@Enterneering, in addition to the situation analysis, the current challenges arising from the company's environment should be analysed too. The structure and procedures in this section are similar to those in Section 2, except that the scoring in our model is on the 1-5 scale and we have again included the additional column to record the effort or gap percentage.
Section 4 (Step A+B+C):
In our model, the last section shows the three preliminary steps in unsorted order, block by block, one after the other. In our model, the last step of the assessment takes place here as a preliminary result for the needs assessment for Enterneering®. At this point, the assignment of each topic to the corresponding elements in Enterneering® or other elements within the company must be made. As we explain in our comments on implementation, we want to be consistent in our focus and properly locate or delegate topics within the organisation. If necessary, read or listen to our explanation, described in the implementation section of Elements@Enterneering, on this point again to avoid possible misunderstandings.
As part of the implementation of Enterneering®, we have integrated the Situation & Environment Analysis tool into our model in addition to the stand-alone solution directly as a preliminary stage in the Need of Action Assessment tool. In this way, the priorities identified in section 4 and the assignments to Enterneering® are directly used for further calculations and simulations.
You can download our sample tool of this section for illustration and dry exercise. We recommend that you first download and look at the PDF file only. If you like the training aid, you can also download our Excel tool afterward.
